Heidi Lubin, CEO of Hybrid Electric Vehicle Technologies (HEVT) has a vision to create “high-performance, highly efficient, affordable and reliable electric motors”. Her baby is a real winner, taking the prize at several major competitions including the coveted Cleantech Open in Californa.

HEVT’s patented switched reluctance machines (SRM) “leverage smart software with optimally designed hardware to empower the next generation of electric motors”. The HEVT technology is 60% less expensive and potentially three times more efficient than competing technologies out there. The best part is HEVT motors are free of rare earth materials.

Replacing rare earth materials with simpler more available metals such as copper and steel, HEVT created a sophisticated yet simple solution to providing clean motors essential to the American economy that reduce our dependence on foreign imports. Most of the rare earth metals of the world, required to build conventional electric motors, are controlled by China.

The technology being developed has even greater impact because these motors can be manufactured anywhere, at a much lower cost, and can be applied to a variety of products. And HEVT makes this possible with a combination of invention and software.

Heidi comes from a pretty impressive background. Her most recent stint prior to joining HEVT, was being an attorney at Kirkland & Ellis, LLP restructuring debt obligations in multiple industries. She had the ability to see the landscape of opportunity as her focus was especially on the automotive, oil and gas, and media sectors. Using this knowledge and her other impressive education experiences in business and the public sector.

The Chicago-based women led startup is leading the pack with over $1 million raised at an early stage, including $300,00 in funding from U.S. Department of Energy’s ARPA-E program and first place prize of $250,000 in the 2012 Cleantech Open’s Global Forum in California.

Heidi Lubin and HEVT have their ticket to ride. Watch the video and find out why.
